Apprentice Shannen Llewellyn landed her first metropolitan winner albeit almost 300km from Sydney, but fittingly in the very epicentre of Australia’s racing and breeding heartland.
Llewellyen, whose first winner was aboard the Dubbo housed, frequent Sydney raider, Elson Boy in March last year, charted the perfect course for a second straight time on the Nathan Doyle-trained Lightning Glory.
The son of Hallowed Crown was able to up the ante on his (and Llewellyn’s) April 16 Wyong win, toppling some better credentialled gallopers including stablemate Duvana and the heavily supported Just Response.
$4,
Neither of those had an answer to Lighting Glory’s sharp dash up the inside fence when called upon by Llewellyn half-way up the Scone straight.
Soon after, Lighting Glory set up a break on his rivals that was whittled down best by the race favourite Nitro whose costly defeat was as much his own doing after being slow out and held up at a vital stage in the stretch.
Lighting Glory’s graduation from provincial winner to metro winner was naturally welcomed by Doyle as a reward for the gelding’s large band of owners.
“It’s great for the owners because this horse had so many niggling injuries early on his career and I kept saying ‘tip him out, give him three months, tip him out give, him three months off’ and he never got to the races until he was four-year-old,” Doyle said
“And they were so patient. They never whinged once, they just let us do out thing and give the horse time and now they’re reaping the rewards.”
Doyle, who finished runner-up in yesterday’s Scone Cup with Churchill's Choice, saved some praise for Llewellyn whose first metropolitan winner was a copybook display of ‘box-seat riding’.
“She just put hm in behind the leader and gave him an easy time,” Doyle said.
“She cut the corner and it was a perfect ride.”
